It's been a whirlwind courtship.  From a March meeting, to a May proposal and now an October wedding. But the rest of our lives . . .

Hungry like a 늑대 . . .

My kids had their first day of school today.  I am sitting in my home office at almost 12 noon, wondering how their first day at their new school is going and if they will like the Americanized doshi-raks I packed them this morning.  (There are no food services at their school so packing lunches is a necessity.)

And since I'm feeling a little nostalgic for Korean comfort food today, too, I think it's Spam and kimchi on my menu for lunch.  ; )

Happy Father's Day

I have two kids.  A girl and a boy.  Most of the time they engage in typical sibling behaviours: they play nice, they don't play nice; they laugh and giggle, they yell and scream; they hug, they hit.  As the third child of four, I know that this typical behaviour for siblings.  I, as their Mom, accept that . . .

Meeting of the Mines

Dating in the 21st Century - Asian Fetish Anyone?

I recently joined an online dating service.

Hello, my name is Angie in Texas and I date online.

The experience overall has been really positive.  I've met a few men who are interesting, smart, funny, good-looking, etc.  I have even gone on a few dates with these men.  And how do I know they're good-looking?  Because many of these sites (I use only one in particular) allow you to post photos of yourself and actually encourage you to do so - you generate more interest with photos . . .

The problem is that the photos are a dead give-away that I am Asian.  (There's a place to denote your ethnicity on your profile, but it's the photos that do it, I think . . .)  I have no issue with the fact that I am Asian.  I know it.  My family knows it.  Even my friends know it. 

The problem lies in the responding interested parties.

Like: Asian Fetish Man. 

Asian Fetish Man is the man who says "ni how" or "an yeoung" at the bookstore.  Asian Fetish Man is the guy you dated who on your first date wanted to know ALL about your "Asian-ess" or worse, kept talking about his experience with Asia, the people and the culture . . .  Asian Fetish Man is also the creppy guy who you *just KNOW* has that demoralizing fantasy of "oh me so horny" sexiness or complete submission.

*Hands Over My Eyes*

Late last night as I was channel surfing, I came across the "Sundance Channel" (I just upgraded my tv programming and am discovering the truth about how even though there are 500 channels  there's still nothing good on . . .).  But last night was one of those rare instances where what was on was something I actually wanted to watch.

It was a 2006 Korean "gangster" film titled "A Dirty Carnival".  And lemme tell you it was good. The story was a good blend of drama, action and (what I like to call) 'Korean tragedy'.  I was a little disappointed in the ending, but I watch enough Korean films to know not to expect too happy an ending.  Without giving away too much, the film really lived up to it's spirit.

Why am I bringing this up?
