First of all, I'm pleased as all get out that Yul Kwon won Survivor Cook Islands on Sunday night. One thing that particularly impressed me, though, was Yul's comment in today's SF Chronicle that part of his plan for his million-dollar winnings was to take care of his parents who had sacrificed so much for him and his brother when they were growing up.
I have always felt that same sense of filial loyalty (and debt), but find that many non-Asians do not. I often hear non-Asian people say, "Having children doesn't guarantee that you'll be taken care of when you're old." Whenever I hear this, I think to myself, "Well, yes it DOES!" Yul demonstrates that (perhaps Confucian) sense of family loyalty that I find so rare in most people these days. It's refreshing.
