Today, October 11, is National Coming Out Day.
I celebrate by affirming my commitment to be an ally to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. To me, this means speaking up when I hear someone say something like "That's so gay." It means pointing out heterosexism when I see it. It means not asking girls if they have boyfriends, because they might have girlfriends. In my life, I try to keep an open mind, about my own sexual orientation, about my daughter's sexual orientation. About what a family looks like - whether there is one parent, two moms, two moms and one dad, or whatever.
Our issues overlap. There are LGBT members of our Asian American communities, and there are Asian American parents that are gay. We all need each other to speak up and support each other in our struggles, especially when we are all struggling to find our voice - whether in the blogging community, or in real life.
As a parent, I hope to raise my children in a way that they never fear coming out. I want my children to know that I will always love and support them, whether they come out to me as gay or whether they come out as straight.
