I've only recently gotten into Oprah. I didn't want to be THAT woman so I resisted liking Oprah for many years but with the help of a DVR, it was too much to resist.
Michelle A Rhee was on Oprah the other day. She talked about some of the stuff she's been up to, like firing the principal of her kid's school. =)
I know very little about the educational system in America, or the world for that matter. But I couldn't help agreeing with every single word that came out of that woman's mouth. I had some great teachers in Korea and in America. I had mostly good teachers in America but I had some crummy ones too. The WORST was the guy who either made us watch videos or gave us 200 question worksheets every single day. He would sit and read the paper while we watched the movie or worked on our worksheets. You had to turn pages in the textbook pretty rapidly in order to finish the worksheet. Good thing the books were old or else we'd all have gotten tons of paper cuts.
As a mom, I am mad that that teacher was not fired. He clearly was not interested in teaching one bit.
The BEST teacher I had... I still remeber his name. Mr. K. He was my junior year English teacher, but oh, he was so much more. He taught a part of the art history class too. He used music in his class. Sure, he had a tiny bit of a temper problem but a character defect that I could easily forgive given his amazing teaching ability. His quizzes did more to help my verbal SAT score and boost my vocab than a thousand worksheets. Yes, I did have a tiny crush on him.
Here's a post dedicated to Michelle A Rhee, and all the mothers out there who try to to obtain the best education for their children. Education really is the key to freedom - as Oprah says.
- Mary thanks her dad for moving to America so that I didn't have to study from 7 AM - 12 midnight everyday during high school and still get into a four year university.
